Belize Tourism

Located on the north-eastern coast of Central America, home to the second longest barrier reef in the world, Belize is a country with remarkable beauty. Sharing borders with Mexico in the north, Guatemala on the south and west, and the Caribbean Sea in the east, Belize is a tiny country dotted with national parks, nature reserves, jungles, archaeological ruins, and the stunning barrier reef with its incredible marine life.

The history of Belize can be traced back to the Mayan civilization, which emerged around 1500 BC and flourished till about 900 CE. Around the 16th century, the Spanish Empire claimed the area but made little progress in settling here. Later, the British arrived and took over during the 17th and 18th century. The territory then became a British Colony and was named as British Honduras in 1862. Though it was granted self-government by the British in 1964, full independence for Belize only came by in 1981. Today, Belize is a constitutional monarchy with a reigning monarch who is the head of state, and a Prime Minister, who is the head of government.

Majority of people in Belize are Roman Catholics, while a large number of people are also Protestants. The other minorities are a mix of Buddhists, Islam, Bahai and Hindus. Though, English is the official language of Belize, more than half of the population speaks Spanish. Mayan, Garifuna and Creole are the other minority dialects spoken in Belize. The climate in Belize is tropical, making the weather hot, humid and rainy.

Snorkel your way amid a myriad of colourful fish and corals, swim along sting rays and turtles, explore the mysterious ruins, or hike across the lush jungles, national parks and wildlife reserves – the opportunities for visitors are literally endless in Belize.
