Historically addressed as Gokarna, the city is a major seaport that has played a significant role in the international trading of Sri Lanka. The Bay is all about scuba diving, fishing, surfing, and whale watching, and is located at about 264 kms from Colombo. The administrative headquarter of the district of Trincolamee and the port city of Srilanka, Trincomalee has been the prime centre Tamil language. The city is constructed on a peninsula which segregates the inner and the outer harbour. The sacred place of Tamil comprises of Buddhist and Hindu sites that have tremendous historical importance.
