Belarus Tourism

Situated in Eastern Europe and bordered by Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, Russia to the northeast and Lithuania and Latvia on the northwest, Belarus is a beautiful, landlocked country with over 40% of its 207,600 kilometers land being densely forested. This hilly lowland is covered with numerous lakes and rivers merging with the Black and Baltic Seas, as well as streams, swamps and peat marshes all rich in precious natural resources.

Originally known as White Russia, Belarus was first colonized by the East Slavic Tribes in 5th century AD, and later saw the dominance of Kiev from 9th to 12th centuries. In the 13th century, the Mongols ended Kiev’s reign, followed by the dukes of Lithuania, who conquered the Mongols. Belarus became a part of the Russian empire in the 18th century and later declared independence during WWI. In present times, Belarus is a presidential republic and is governed by its national assembly and the president.

Belarus is primarily an Eastern Orthodox Christian state with 82% of its population following Christianity. Several minorities include Jews and Muslims. Belarus follows two official languages, Russian used by 72% and Belarusian by 11.9%, with other foreign languages like Polish, Eastern Yiddish and Ukrainian spoken by minorities. The climate ranges from moist summers to mild and chilly winters.

Belarus, with its picturesque landscapes and numerous historic and touristic attractions like museums and World War memorials like Khatyn Memorial, Mount of Glory, Stalin Line and more, attracts an average of 100,000 tourists each year. The majority of these tourists visit Minsk, the largest and the capital city, while other popular cities like Grondo, Bretsk, and Vitebsk are also famous for their natural beauties.
