Brunei Darussalam Tourism

Located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, Brunei is a sovereign state surrounded by the Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah, bordering the South China Sea and the Brunei Bay. Brunei boasts one of the highest per capita GDPs in the world, owing to its rich natural reserves of oil and petroleum. The royal lineage and legacy stamp the region with unmatched historic and cultural significance in the southeastern provinces.

Brunei’s existence dates back to the 6th century AD when it began trading with the Chinese, and then came under the Hindu influence with the entry of the Javanese Majapahit Kingdom from the 13th century till the 15th century. After the decline of the Majapahits, Brunei slowly accumulated the Muslim heritage and soon became an independent Sultanate after it adopted Islam. Brunei lost its shine in the early 1900s and became dependent on the British. It was later occupied by the Japanese during the WWII but was freed by Australia in 1945. Brunei follows the Malay Islamic monarchy and is governed by the constitution and national tradition.

The official language spoken in Brunei is Malay, while English has also been recognized by the authorities. Also, several ethnic languages like Brunei Malay, Tutong, Kedayan, Beliyat, Murut, Dusun and Bisaya are widely spoken by the ethnic people belonging to Malay and other indigenous races. Chinese is also spoken by a small section of the settlers. With its tropical equatorial climate, Brunei mostly has warm summers and dry, mild winters.

Brunei is home to some of the most beautiful rivers and quaint villages oozing with culture and heritage. The capital city and the largest city of Brunei Darussalam, Bandar Seri Begawan, attracts tourists throughout the year, while other cities like Kuala Belait, Seria, Temburong, Tutong and Pananga too offer a myriad of attractions and activities.
