Arignar Anna Zoological Park
You would definitely fancy visiting this one especially if you are travelling with kids. A home to about 1500 wild species and spread in vast expansive grounds, Arignar Anna Zoological Park is located about 35 kms away from the main city of Chennai. Do not miss out on enjoying an elephant, deer or lion safari while you check out various sections of the zoo. You will also find a special section dedicated to nocturnal animals, a butterfly house and an aquarium. The park is open on all days except Tuesdays, from 9am to 5pm (IST). The tickets for same starts at 30rs, and one could take their own camera or handy cam for which they have to pay a nominal fee.
Thousand Lights Mosque
Religious or otherwise, Thousand Lights Mosque, is an architectural marvel that should not be missed while touring Chennai. As the name suggest, a total of 1000 oil lamps light up the hall of the mosque, making it a spectacular sight to see. The mosque timings extend from 5:30 am to 9 pm and this multi-dome structure has separate hall for women.

Spread in sprawling area of 20 acres, the Semmozhi Poonga Park is an ideal place to visit in Chennai with family. This botanical garden is overseen by the horticultural department of Chennai and has the exotic and rare flora grown along with some medicinal herbs in the green houses of the park. The botanical gardens has many theme gardens namely fern garden, rock garden, butterfly garden etc., and they are quite fun to have a look at. Ideal for a day picnic, time spent at Semmozhi Poonga is well worth it.
Things to do in Chennai
Widely known for being the largest beach, Marina Beach is one of the best places to experience spectacular sun rises or sunsets. The endless stretch of sand dotted by palm tree on one side and Blue Ocean on another is a sight to see. And, when you are bored of eating warm, roasted cob, building sand castles, or taking longish stroll on the beach – check out the old light house that stands on the southern end of Marina along with various other structures including a swimming pool, an aquarium, and a park.
Craving for picturesque backwaters just like that of Kochi? Well, you need not modify your travelling plans for you could visit Muttukadu, a backwater area of Bay of Bengal. It is not only the picturesque sight that would overwhelm its visitors but also the fact that it has extensive facilities including water sports, fine dine and large number of boats for stay. While Muttukadu can be visited throughout the year, do plan your visit during winter months i.e. November to February to experience the pleasant climate.
