About Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr, as we know, is the religious holiday celebrated by all the Muslims worldwide. It marks the end of the month-long fasting period called Ramadan, the ninth month on the lunar calendar. This year, the Islamic dawn to dusk fasting period commences from April and ends in May. During the period of fasting, a person cannot drink water or eat food all throughout the day. Each day of fasting has two specific times when a person can consume food and water- Sahoor (the time before sunrise) and Fatoor (the time after sunset). And the best way to break the fast is with dates. But in case, dates are not available, one can break it with water as well. After the fasting period of 30 days of fasting comes the day of breaking the fast which happens to be the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. Traditionally, Eid al-Fitr begins at sunset on the night of the first sighting of the crescent moon. If the moon is not seen immediately after the 29th day of the previous lunar month then the holiday is celebrated the following day. The festival is celebrated for one to three days, depending on a country’s tradition. It is forbidden to fast on the Day of Eid, and a special prayer is performed for the day. As an obligatory act of charity, alms are given to the poor and the needy before conducting the Eid prayer.
