Where: Borneo, Nicaragua or Mount KilimanjaroWhy: These eccentric, unconventional souls, Aquarians usually go off the beaten track and tend to avoid usual tourist places like plague. They find solace in spiritual, harmonious places and are fascinated by innovation and new technology. The water-bearers aren’t much into planning or details and will mostly take trips on a spontaneous whim. Always ready to take up a cause and fight injustice, Aquarians are huge humanitarians that crave spiritual enlightenment and hence, will want to go to places that give them fulfilling experiences. Fellow Aquarian Irfan Ahmad says: “Traveling for me is a way of life. I have travelled to hill stations, backwater destinations, laidback places but there is something about the endless stretches of water to which I am drawn to like a duck. The dancing tides and the vast swathes of water seemingly mixing with the horizon in the distance make me nostalgic every time I set foot on a beach. And for that, Goa, India is one place that satiates the thirst of the wanderer within me.”
Pisces (February 19 – March 20)
Where: Santorini, Fiji, Casablanca or VladivostokWhy: A water sign, and that too a fish! It is no secret that Pisces love water and that any romantic beach or tropical island destination would fill them with glee. These dreamers are always eager to plan a getaway from their monotonous life and will usually look for a place where they can freely express themselves and develop their artistic nature. However, they’re also quite whimsical and cannot follow strict pre-scheduled plans. Pisces dislike commerciality of any sort and need to explore and roam free, on their own. Meenal Thobde, a Piscean, tells us: “A few years back, we went on a family holiday to South India. And to say the trip was a memorable one would be an understatement! I travelled across Chennai, Hyderabad, Kanyakumari, Ooty and Kodaikanal to name a few gorgeous places. “The Kanyakumari beach was stunning. What I liked the most about this entire outing was that instead following a strict, pre-planned program, we were our own masters, visiting places at our own pace and skipping those we didn’t like. Now, I plan to experience a cruise holiday all by myself.”
Aries (March 21-April 19):
Where: Backpacking throughout Europe, Dubai, or wildlife safaris in Kenya
Why: Being thorough adventurists at heart, Aries are natural travel enthusiasts. Their inborn energy, combined with a headstrong nature, instinctively drives them on uncharted paths to discover new places and experiences along the way. Not the ones to sit idle, these rams love adrenaline and zeal on their holidays.
Narayan Mallapur, an Aries shares the details of his Ladakh trip undertaken 25 years ago.
“What would be more offbeat than travelling all alone on a motorcycle on the highest motorable road in the world? The 470 kilometre Manali-Leh road covers the most formidable mountainous terrain passing over five high mountain passes – the Rohtang Pass, Baralacha Pass, Changle, Chalangla and last but not the least, Tanglangla. It’s much worse than crossing the infamous Zojila Pass a hundred times over; and combined with the fact that, after Keylong, there is absolutely no habitation at all. If I had an inkling to what was in store for me, I would have never attempted this journey!”
Taurus (April 20 - May 20):
Where: Cannes, Milan, or Las Vegas
Why: Oh the planners! Taurus are meticulous people who enjoy planning their trips as much as (sometimes even more than) actually going on the trip. Apart from being nature lovers, they want to celebrate holidays with good food and grandeur and of course, by ensuring that their outing is nothing less than a complete luxury.
However, Megha Kaimal, a Taurean does not completely agree to our analysis.
“The most memorable trips of my life were not only the ones whereI did the least planning, but were also the ones I took when I was literally broke!” she says.
“I remember one such trip to Himachal Pradesh, where I did no planning and my budget was tight. Travelled to Delhi with a general compartment train ticket, travelled within Himachal by local (and extremely rickety) state transport buses, ate at local, inexpensive roadside dhabas (sampled the tastiest North Indian food ever), and stayed at cheap hostels (made friends for a lifetime). So basically, I travelled like a true local, and experienced the true and rustic beauty of India – an experience which no amount of money or lavish luxuries could have matched!”
Gemini (May 21 – June 20):
Where: Rio de Janerio, Istanbul or London
Why: These enthusiastic, unpredictable twins are born to gather information, and oh! How they love to talk! If ever you find a random tourist in an animated conversation with the natives or their guide, there is a good possibility they belong to this air sign! Geminis appreciate places where they can learn new things and are easily bored by a ‘meaningless’ holiday. Crowded, multi-cultural and historic places would be ideal for them.
Born on 10th June, Digvijay Pratap is a hard-core Gemini.
Says he: “Two of the best places I remember holidaying in are Thailand and Windermere, London. Thailand’s Kon Phangan Island holds a full moon party every month and it is ideally one of the biggest party places in Asia. I remember meeting a lovely Pakistani couple there and we spent hours discussing about our countries, cultures among other things. I also interacted with several Israelis, Scandinavians, Brits and had a good time talking to all of them. My solo trip to Windermere was even more memorable. I booked a cottage for a week and explored the beautiful countryside with its local churches and heritage buildings. The residents there are very humble and friendly; strangers actually stop their cars on the way to ask tourists if they need any help. Next, I wish to visit Bora Bora or Tahiti.”
Cancer (June 21 – July 22):
Where: Maldives, French Riviera,Mauritius or Cape Cod
Why: The sensitive Cancerians are family people that are drawn to stability and familiarity of their natural surroundings. Not the ones to usually come out of their shells, they look for an emotional connect in the location they plan to visit, and once found, are drawn to the same place time and again. Since Cancer is a water sign, beach and riverside destinations would make them feel completely at home.
Anubha Dhobal, whose birthday falls on 7th July, says so.
“I really wish to visit Maldives,” she gushes. “The place is known to be beautiful and peaceful, away from the hustle-bustle of city life. Also, my hometown Dehradun remains one of my favourite places. I love its sightseeing attractions and it gives me a peace of mind that no place ever can.”
Leo (July 23 – August 22):
Where: New York, New Delhi or Bali
Why: If you’re a Leo, you expect royalty all the way! And rightly so, because lions deserve no less. Known for their generosity, this fire sign loves travelling with friends and family, and splurge money on them without hesitation. Leos prefer places that boast of a rich culture, lavish dining, happening nightlife, and above all, places that’ll get them noted and admired.
Nitin Patil, a Leo, recalls one such vacation he took 3 years back.
“I explored a major part of North-East India for 15-20 days. What struck me there was the distinct difference in culture, thinking and the kind of people living there, and how different it all was from the rest of India. I felt extremely comfortable there as the locals were very humble and friendly.”
Virgo (August 23 – September 22):
Where: Volunteering in Bolivia, Cambodia or Morocco
Why: The meticulous Virgo is a practical person with a goal. They are well-organised and their perfectionist nature does not allow them to unwind unless they have a proper plan. These masters of purposeful travel also find great joy in helping others and learning something new. Hence, a volunteering program in a developing country would be a perfect holiday for this earth sign.
“Virgo’s are very thoughtful and sensitive persons and they have an inkling to contribute something to the society,”
Saurabh Das, a Virgo agrees.
He further answers: “Keeping with the attributes of my zodiac sign, I decided to do something meaningful while on a trip. I visited Darjeeling in the summer of 2014 and decided to teach at a local school run by a local NGO for impoverished kids of the hardworking tea planters and labourers. On a heavily rainy day, surrounded by misty tea plantations and the Raj era heritage buildings and tea processing factories, I entered a derelict building with a leaking roof and surrounded by thick vegetation of shrubs and vines.
“My first sight was to see some 30 kids, all malnourished and longing for attention; waiting with blank eyes and bleak hopes. The very sight is despairing for a thoughtful Virgos. I joined the class with a hope of teaching but rather, ended up with telling fun stories from Panchatantra, Arabian Nights, Aesop's Fables, Jataka Tales and Hitopadesha. The result was really satisfying. Poor kids were enjoying and laughing, and with them, I joined with pleasure, knowing that one little day, I made a little difference in their extremely painful lives.”
Libra (September 23 – October 22):
Where: Gold Coast, Naples, Caribbean Islands or Ireland
Why: This ever-balanced air sign thrives on elegance and doesn’t enjoy agitation or discord of any sort. Libras are social and peaceful by nature and wish to entertain their travel companions as well when on holiday. A pre-planned group holiday to a poetic destination works best for a Libran, who are known to be full of surprises themselves!
Zeinab Alayan, a true-blue Libran born on 16th October reminisces about her Italian sojourn:In 2016, I celebrated my birthday in Italy with two of my friends. I spent the two months leading up to that trip meticulously studying various routes in the cities we were visiting, working in my friends' requests and must-see locations, researching attractions and hidden gems, booking tickets and passes... even brushing up on some Italian phrases! All that planning was well worth it in the end. We saw all the typical touristy sights, sure, but we also discovered so many off-the-beaten-track places. We explored a Capuchin crypt in Rome, got lost in the beautiful Bardini garden in Florence, ate freshly-made pesto fusilli with our feet dangling into the canals of Venice, drank hot chocolate at one of the oldest chocolatiers in Turin, cruised the blue waters of Como, and concluded the trip with a fancy dinner at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. It's a trip I still reflect on every once in a while, especially when I'm at an Italian restaurant and the food never measures up to the many, many pizzas and gelatos consumed on that trip!
Bosco Pereira, who celebrates his birthday on 14th October, reveals:
“In 2012, I took a week-long expedition to Ushuaia and Antarctica. It was a half-packaged tour that I’d taken with a small group of previous fellow travellers.
“I was captivated by the scenic beauty of this region – Ushuaia is one of those very few places that that can boast of a beach as well as stunning snow-capped mountains – all in one view! Oh and did I mention about skinny dipping in Antarctica? Certainly not something I’ll forget anytime soon.”
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21):
Where: Galapagos Islands, New Orleans, or Ladakh
Why: One of the most enigmatic and mysterious of all signs, a Scorpio is likely to go to places that gives them some adventure and an unforgettable experience. For these water signs, holidays are all about exploration, mental stimulation, and inspirations. A Scorpion values privacy more than anything else and would rather read or discover less-travelled places than party every night. A reflective, life changing journey to an exotic destination is what would gratify them.
Scorpion Prachi Sharma says:
“Even if I'm not much of a risk taker like a true-blue scorpion, I would love to do unusual things on a trip. Like: People might go gaga about riding up the so called "highest motorable road" of Ladakh, but I would rather prefer camping near the Pangong Tso Lake.
“Imagine a cosy tent, starry night (full moon, if you plan well), conversations, and the serene yet mighty lake... Yup! This is definitely on my bucket list!”
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21):
Where: Siberia, Machu Picchu or Jerusalem
Why: The wanderer’s sign, Sagittarians love absorbing philosophical insights. These free-spirited people celebrate meeting new people and consuming different cultures and their search for knowledge and adventure makes them good road partners. The archer prefers the great outdoors and will not hesitate to venture out solo. They generally do not gel well in a group packaged tour as they’re always on the lookout for new challenges and will not be satisfied unless they’ve gained a deeper perspective on life during the journey.
In the words of Sagittarius Ravi Chandran:
“I am a very spiritual person and I have taken trips to Vrindavan, Udipi and Jagannath Puri, of which the last one remains the most cherished one.
“I heard legends and folklore about this amazing place as well as revelled in its history and ancient temples. Even the Prasad (religious offering) had an inarticulately different taste to it. I recall having inspiring conversations with my hotel owner and a local barber. I plainly came back a different person.”
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19):
Where: Prague, Cairo or Quebec City
Why: The most hardworking and work-driven of them all, you’ll hardly see Capricorns on casual holidays. But they sure have a taste for elegance and style when they finally decide to take a break! Being an earth sign, Capricorns are lovers of history and all things old and traditional. A Capricorn also enjoys routine and security, especially on vacations, hence is unlikely to go on unplanned backpack trips. These mountain goats treasure high places that characterize success and cherish staying at renowned, aristocratic hotels.
17th January-born Meghna RajeMahadik reveals:
“I wish to visit Greece, as it’s a place you would like to fall in love with, be it for its culture, the turquoise waters, stunning landscapes or ancient history. Greece also has one of the best climates in the world. It’s a mix of everything. A complete family holiday place.”
