While the rest of the world was pining to have a slice of Western Europe with its cliched Eiffels, Alps, and Leaning Towers, I craved for something different, something not so blatantly touristy, but nonetheless Europe. That’s when I zeroed in on Scandinavia – the land of ethereal wilderness, stylish cities, cute villages, endless days and nights, and the grand aurora borealis! To begin exploring this beautiful, majestic region, I had decided to start with Sweden!

The largest of the Nordic nations, Sweden leaves you amazed in more ways than you can imagine. From deep, virgin forests to frozen lakes, to picturesque islands, charming cottages, surreal countryside, beautiful architecture, and stylish cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo – the moment I set foot in Sweden, I knew it was going to become one of my most favourite countries in the world!

While Stockholm welcomed me with its impeccable style and grandiose architecture, giving me an unforgettable taste of urban Sweden, it was only when I left the city behind, that I was able to experience the quintessential natural beauty and wilderness that Scandinavia screams of!

After many a balmy strolls through Stockholm and its islands, and hiking and cycling through the dreamy, adorable countryside in South Sweden, here are a few beautiful images that hopefully reveal what is truly special about this gorgeous land of the Vikings.

Panoramic vistas of Stockholm

Beautiful summertime panoramic vistas of Stockholm, including views of Gamla Stan (Old Town). Even before landing at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, my love affair with this country began from the airplane itself. As I looked out at Sweden’s aerial views from up above, I couldn’t help but gape in awe at how green and beautiful the country looked – sprawling greens dotted with the typical red Swedish cottages!

We stumbled upon this charming windmill in a village called Farhult, while on a road trip in South Sweden. The entire setting, complete with the lush grass, the windmill, the wooden tables, and the cute hut, was too good to NOT capture! This fully restored Dutch windmill was built in 1850, and was in regular operation until 1956!

The colourful Stortorget Place

Located in Gamla Stan (Old Town), the colourful Stortorget Place is a small public square – the oldest square in Stockholm! Ideal place to sip a cappuccino and indulge in some people-watching.

Some of my best moments in Sweden were spent traversing the beautiful paths running along Djurgarden, a stunningly picturesque island in Stockholm. And what better way than a bicycle to do so?! The boats, the flowers, the blue skies, the wooden walkway – so many elements in one frame!

This is the cutest harbour ever, which we spotted while cycling around Skåne county, South Sweden! Bluest of skies, cows grazing on the greenest of grass, brick-red cottages, and colourful boats bobbing by the tiny dock – nothing beats this classic Swedish village-scape!

Yet another stunning glimpse of Kattvik harbour. Everything, absolutely everything about this small harbour was charming to the core, including a tiny cafe that sold waffles and ice-cream. One could sit here all day, admiring the view and watch kids and families fishing for Crayfish!

Sweden is known for its beautiful, dynamic countryside – harbours, beaches, villages, forests, lakes, tiny road-side cafes and taverns – you are likely to witness all of these and more – in a single evening! Believe it or not, this picture was clicked close to 10:30 PM – endless sunlight is the best part about Scandinavian summers!

During my walk from Liljeholmen bus station, Stockholm, to my apartment, I passed this cozy bench sitting by a tiny lake. I could not help but fall in love with how nature fuses into every inch of Stockholm city. Such an amazing relief from the concrete jungles that most of us spend our entire lives in!

The quaint harbours of South Sweden were undoubtedly one of the main highlights of the trip! Lervik harbour was an absolute delight with its vibrant boats, surreal evening hues, and the nippy evening breeze.

When in Sweden, you’re never too far from an extraordinarily cute cottage! This particular cottage was home to me, for the majority of my stay in the country. The country is dotted with charming houses like these, some of them being centuries old!

Visiting this beautiful country was definitely one of my best travel experiences ever, and I certainly intend to head back some day, for more. Stayed tuned to read more about other interesting aspects about Sweden, that I shall be covering over the coming days!
