Jodhpur’s iconic heritage hotel, Umaid Bhawan Palace has been named the world’s best hotel by the highly reputed travel rating site, TripAdvisor! The hotel specialises in providing authentic royal experience with an extremely high standard of service. A normal room starts at a hefty price of 50,000 INR but the experience of staying the world’s best hotel is worth shelling out the amount.
The classic heritage property, named after Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur, was commissioned in 1929 as a royal project to provide relief for citizens of Jodhpur reeling under a severe famine. Maharaja Umaid Singh commissioned Henry Vaughan Lanchester as the main architect of the palace. This lavish project was finally completed in 1943 and served its noble purpose of famine relief to the people of Jodhpur. As per the latest list of Top-25 Hotels in the world, this hotel has managed to make it to the top.
Designed in a neo-classical style, Umaid Bhawan Palace incorporates a grand cupola of 105 feet high, influenced by the Renaissance architecture. The side towers and spires are influenced by Rajasthani architecture while the grand columns are prominent examples of Georgian architecture. The interiors were designed in Art Deco style and adorned with exotic murals by the self-exiled Polish artist Stefan Norblin. Part of the Palace has been converted into a museum which documents the State of Jodhpur’s rich history, legacy and its collection of artefacts. Another part of the Palace is still in use as the residence of the current royal family.
Initially, criticised for being an extravagant construction, it became one of the largest royal residence in the world. Maharaja Gaj Singh, who is now the current owner of the palace decided to convert the palace into a heritage hotel which is now managed by Taj Group of Hotels.
