Officially known as Virgin Islands, the prefix British is used to differentiate it from the nearby American lands. This exquisite island country is located in the Caribbean, with Puerto Rico to its immediate west. Apart from the collection of over fifty stunning islands and cays, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, Tortola and Anegada are the four major islands under the British Virgin Islands.
The Arawaks, who came from South America in 100 BC, were the first settlers here. It was in 15th century that Caribs, an aggressive clan from Lesser Antilles islands, invaded the kingdom and forced the Arawaks to leave. It was taken under British rule in late 16th century and was made an agricultural hub for sugar cane production. The colonies separated in 1960 to create a tourism base economy of their own. Presently, they are on the path of becoming one of the richest localities of Caribbean.
Christianity is followed by 45% of the population, 21% are Anglican, 6% are Roman Catholics and the remaining follow other religions. Being a part of a British archipelago, many customs and traditions here exhibit English influence. Even the official as well as the most largely spoken language here happens be English.
