The Croats, a predominant section of the country’s population, first set foot here in the 7th century. The first king, Tomislav ruled over the Kingdom of Croatia (Year 925), he was succeeded by a line of kings, a trend that continued for two centuries. A union with Hungary followed in 1102, an invasion threat from the Ottoman Empire loomed in 1527. The two world wars were catalyst to changes in Croatia. Croatia declared independence in 1991 and fought a successful war that lasted four years. Presently, Croatia is a fast developing nation.
Though the official language of the country is Croatian, there is the prevalence of other languages too – Slovakian, Italian, Hungarian, Czech and Serbian. While traditional cuisine is prevalent, there is a whole cluster of Mediterranean and Italian dishes too. White wine is a particular speciality.
