Latvia Tour Packages
One of the most popular countries of the three Baltic States, Latvia is a charming country sandwiched between Estonia to its north and Lithuania on its south, and is surrounded by the Baltic Sea on its east. Apart from Estonia and Lithuania, the country also shares land borders with Russia and Belarus towards the east and southeast. Officially referred to as the Republic of Latvia, the country entices tourists with its diverse landscapes, medieval architecture, numerous national parks, coastal beaches, and its sizzling capital city, Riga.
Various Latvian tribes settled along the Baltic Sea until the 13th century when the land went on to be sporadically invaded by clans including the German knights, followed by the Poles, Swedes, and ultimately the Russians in the 18th century. Latvia remained under Russian rule from 1795 until 1918, when it was proclaimed as an independent nation. However, the independence didn’t last long, with Latvia being invaded by Soviet Union in 1940, by the Nazis in 1941, and again being re-occupied by the Soviets in 1944. Latvia finally achieved full independence in 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The majority religion in Latvia is made up of Lutherans and Catholics, followed by a minority of Russian Orthodox. While Latvian is the official language, Russian, German and English are also widely spoken across the country. Latvia experiences a temperate climate that varies according to the area. The western coast enjoys cool summers and mild winters whereas the eastern parts exhibit warm summers and harsh winters.
Be it savouring the spectacular art nouveau buildings and the bustling nightlife of Riga, cycling or hiking at the scenic national parks, taking in breath-taking sites of the picturesque river valley and sandstone cliffs, or simply enjoying water sports at the pristine beaches, Latvia is a perfect stop for a unique and authentic holiday experience.
