Mongolia was ruled by various nomadic tribes, including the Xianbei, the Xiongnu, and others, for thousands of years, before the powerful Mongol Empire was formed in 1206 AD, under the leadership of Genghis Khan. Under Genghis Khan and his descendants, the empire flourished, as they amassed territories stretching all the way from Korea to Hungary. Eventually, Mongolia was taken over by China’s Qing Dynasty until it collapsed in 1911. Mongolia then went under Soviet influence, and remained so until 1990, when it had its first democratic elections, thus getting rid of communist rule.
A major chunk of Mongolia’s population follows Buddhism, while the remaining are either Christians, Muslims or are non-religious. While the official language of the country is Mongolian, languages like Kazakh and other Mongolian dialects are also spoken. The climate in Mongolia is generally dry, with short, mild summers and long, extreme winters.
