Before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, Paraguay was inhabited by various indigenous tribes for thousands of years. Asuncion was founded in 1537 by the Spanish, and Paraguay was established. In 1811, after almost 250 years, Paraguay finally gained independence from the Spanish. Post-independence, Paraguay was ruled by a series of dictators for the next 80 years. Unrest and civil wars followed during the mid-1900s. Currently, Paraguay is a democratic republic with a President, who is the head of state and head of government.
Around 90% of Paraguayans are Roman Catholics, while the remainder are Protestants. Spanish and Guarani are the official languages in Paraguay, with Guarani being spoken by majority of the country’s rural population. Paraguay enjoys a subtropical climate with hot summers, mild winters and heavy rainfall.
