The two-island nation of St Kitts and Nevis offer an insight into the Caribbean lifestyle like none other. The islands were inhabited by the Native American people known as the Kalinago, who arrived in the islands approximately three centuries ahead of the Europeans. The Spaniards discovered the islands under Columbus in 1493. Eventually, the British finally won the war of control for Saint Kitts and Nevis against France in the 1713. The country achieved complete independence in 1983. A referendum to separate Nevis from the union fell short of the two-third majority in 1998.
The islands are volcanic in origin and are covered with tropical rainforest. The highest peak in the country is the Mount Liamuiga on St. Kitts which stand tall at about 1,156 metres. The majority of the population live near the sea where the land is much flatter and there are numerous fresh water rivers and springs which provide drinking water to the local population.
Saint Kitts and Nevis has a typical tropical climate with constant sea breeze. The rainy season (May to November) is also characterised by tropical storms. The demographics of this country include majority of the people of African descent while the rest are of Afro-European descent. A sizable number of South Asian communities are also present in Saint Kitts and Nevis. English and Creole are the widely spoken languages. Tourism, banking, agriculture and export-oriented small industries are major driving factor of the economy of this Caribbean island nation.
