At the height of its imperialism, China ruled over Vietnam for over thousand years, a reign that ended in the year 938. Vietnam won independence post a war and a procession of royal dynasties followed who ruled and expanded territory. A certain peninsular area was colonized by the French in the middle of the 19th century. The French were finally routed by the Vietnamese in 1954. The North and South Vietnam rivalry then began, causing much destruction and death until the war’s culmination in 1975 with a North Vietnam victory. After remaining isolated, a 1986 change in economic and political reforms led to Vietnam’s present accessibility and popularity.
Vietnamese is the most spoken and official language of the country. More than 85% of the population are followers of Buddhism. About 7% of the people are Catholics. Other local religions make up the remaining 8%. Fish, rice, fruits, shrimp, vegetables and herbs are some of the common ingredients in most dishes. Mostly covered with forests and hills (over 80%), barely 20% of the land is levelled. Due to latitudinal and topography changes, the climate differs from region to region. Seasonal variations include heavy rainfall and a dry winter.
