Guadeloupe Tour Packages
A mesmerising group of islands tucked away in eastern Caribbean, Guadeloupe is an island country which is essentially an overseas territory of France. Located on the southeast of Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe is surrounded by other island countries like Montserrat, Antigua and Barbuda, and Dominica on its periphery. The country is also referred to as ‘Butterfly Island’ owing to the shape of its two major islands – Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre. Basse-Terre is the capital and largest city of Guadeloupe.
Christopher Columbus arrived in Guadeloupe in 1493, becoming the first European to land on the island. In 1635, French settlers arrived on the island and established colonies. Over the next few centuries the British made a few attempts to annex the island, however, the islands always remained under the French. In 1946, Guadeloupe was given the status of a French Overseas Department.
The predominant religion in Guadeloupe is Roman Catholicism, with the remainder being a mix of Protestants, Hindus and other ethnic groups. While French is the official and most widely spoken language in Guadeloupe, Creole is also spoken by majority of the locals. The climate here remains warm throughout the year, with rains lashing the islands usually between June and October.
