Located on the central tip of Northern Africa, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya is fondly known as Libya all over the world. The nation holds a trove of ancient Greek and Roman cities embellished with the royal and spectacular reminisces of Byzantine kingdom. Landlocked from three sides, with Tunisia and Algeria to its west, Niger and Chad to its south, Egypt and Sudan to its west, this land of splendorous deserts finds its northern end bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

According to the archaeological traces found, the existence of Libyan civilization dates back to 8000 BC. The coastal lands are said to be occupied by the cattle bearers and farmers. Later on the country saw migration and rule of various races and civilizations which included Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Persians, Byzantines and vandals. The fact behind stunning Italian art and architecture found in Libya is that it was known as Italian North Africa in early 20th century. After an age long struggle, suffering and strife while it stayed under different European colonial rules, Libya finally gained independence in 2011.

Although standard Arabic is the official language in Libya, but people take the liberty of speaking slightly twisted Libyan Arabic. English is understood by most of the population, while the aged population still speaks Italian advocating the colonial era of past.  Majority of inhabitants are Sunni Muslims whereas a few Christian communities exist in very small numbers.
