Monaco Tourism

A miniscule city-state situated on the French Riviera in Western Europe, Monaco is the second smallest country in the world. Officially known as the Principality of Monaco, the country shares borders with France on three sides, with its western coast opening out into the Mediterranean Sea. Monaco makes up for its small size with its larger than life attitude, oozing with glamour and opulence. Be it the luxurious yachts dotting the harbour, the numerous celebrities flocking the country for its lavishness, or the remarkable events and festivals hosted by the country all around the year, every part of Monaco screams hedonism.

The history of Monaco can be traced back to the Grimaldi family who ruled Monaco since 1297. Over the centuries that followed, Monaco prospered as a major maritime port, as well as a strategic naval base for the European military powers. Following the French Revolution, Monaco was annexed by France. According to the Franco-Monegasque treaty of 1861, Monaco was placed under French guardianship, but retained its independence. Since 1911, Monaco has been a constitutional monarchy, with the Sovereign Prince of Monaco being the head of state.

The majority of the population in Monaco comprises of Roman Catholics, whereas the remainder is made up of Anglican and Jewish minorities. French is the official language of Monaco. Italian is spoken by the country’s sizeable Italian community while English is also spoken by residents belonging to Irish, Canadian, British or American decent. Monegasque, the traditional native language, is spoken by a minority of the population. Monaco enjoys a mild climate throughout the year, with hot, dry summers and wet, mild winters.

If you’re looking to bask in the best of Monaco, epic annual events like Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Tennis Master Series won’t let you down. The country even hosts other iconic festivals such as the Monte Carlo Opera, the Spring Arts Festival, the Monaco International Non Violent Film Festival, and more.
