Occupying most of Northern Asia and Eastern Europe, Russia is the largest country in the world. Partially landlocked, it shares borders with Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. Moscow is the capital and largest city of Russia.

The history of Russia can be traced back to the Slavs, who emerged between the 3rd and 9th centuries. The state of Rus emerged during the 9th century, which was established by a Viking named Rurik. This was followed by an invasion by the Mongols during the 13th century. In the 16th century, Ivan IV, the first Czar of Russia, established a Russian state. Reforms and westernization in Russia happened under reign of Peter the Great (1689-1725). In 1922, Soviet Union, the world’s first socialist state, was formed. However, post-Cold War, in 1991, Soviet Union was dissolved and the Russian Federation, as it is known today, was finally established.

Russian is the official language. Although a number of other minority languages, including English are spoken as well. Owing to Russia’s vast size, the climate varies from humid continental to subarctic, to humid subtropical and semi-arid.
