Cambodia Tourism

Cambodia stands for Asia at its earthiest and spiritual best. The name of the country is derived from the Sanskrit word, Kambuja. The country is officially referred to as The Kingdom of Cambodia. For many years, it was also called the Khmer Empire. An agreeable royal influence over the country’s constitutional monarchy has ensured peace and prosperity in the country once ravaged by internal and external strife. Cambodia is famous for its numerous temples and museums that showcase its troublesome history. The rivers, lakes and pristine beaches are another drawing factor for the tourists.

Khmer is main language spoken by the residents of the country. As a remnant of its colonial hangover, French is also spoken by the older generation. A variant of the language, the Cambodian French is still used as an official language, especially in matters pertaining to the law. The tourist influx has resulted in more people conversing in English these days.

From colonisation to the devastating Vietnam War and the bloody Khmer Rouge regime with the tyrannical Pol Pot at its head and the mass killings, Cambodia has had a very troubled past. Since the restoration of the monarchy in 1993, Cambodia has moved towards stability and has become a popular tourist destination.

Rice and fish are part of the staple diet of the Cambodians. Noodles and soups are also popular food items consumed by the locals. A variety of tropical fruits is also found in this Southeast Asian country. Thailand and Vietnam make peaceful neighbours. The country sees a tropical climate with intermittent rainy season (courtesy the southwest monsoon) and the dry seasons affecting it throughout the year.

Buddhists make up more than 96% of the population, Islam, Christianity and other religions make up the rest. The capital Phnom Penh, once known as the ‘Pearl of Asia’, is a bustling city situated on the banks of the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers.
