Antigua and Barbuda Tourism

Antigua and Barbuda are two island countries in the Caribbean, tucked away between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The twin islands share their borders with Puerto Rico on the east and southeast, off the coast of South America. Antigua is the larger of the two islands, and typifies the modern day appearance of a small Caribbean hub. Tourism dominates as the islands’ major source of revenue.

Antigua was first explored by the famous navigator Christopher Columbus in 1493 and named after the Church of Santa Maria de la Antigua in Seville. The island was later colonized by Britain in 1632, while Barbuda was colonized in 1637. The two islands joined the West Indies Federation in 1958 and eventually became a part of West Indies in 1967. The islands finally achieved complete independence in 1981. Today, the government of the Islands runs within the framework of a constitutional monarchy.

Christianity is the major religion of Antigua and Barbuda islands with Anglicanism being the predominant religion, followed by Protestants and a few Roman Catholic believers. Also, a minor group of natives follow Islam, Judaism, Rastafari Movement and Baha’I faiths. The official language of both the Islands is English, while a few local dialects are also spoken by the native people.

The Antigua and Barbuda Islands are packed with pleasure-filled tourist activities and attractions. The sailing regatta championships in the islands are popular throughout the world. Sherley Heights is popular for its historic National Park and the Nelsons Dock Yard. Other touristic attractions and experiences include the Extreme Marine Scuba Ltd, hunting for ducks, saltwater fishing, and more.
