Known to have 11 defined economic zones, most of Azerbaijan experiences a temperate climate throughout the year. The average yearly temperature fluctuates between 14-15°C. During winters, the temperature hovers between 0-15°C, while the summers are warm with temperatures between 20-40°C. However, the temperatures drop drastically towards the inland areas near the mountains. The mighty Caucasus Mountains shield Azerbaijan from the air masses coming from the Arctic, which affect Russia during winters. Similarly, it is the Caspian Sea that protects Azerbaijan from the dry, hot air coming in from Central Asia during the summer.
Though Azerbaijan is ideal to be visited anytime of the year, the best time to visit the country is during the months of April-June and September-October. These months offer clear skies and a warm, pleasant weather. This is the time when the temperatures are comfortable, the sky is bright and the flowers at bloom. The summer months of June, July and August can at times get oppressively hot and humid. Similarly, the winter months from November to March can see temperatures falling below zero. If you are a sun, sand and sea lover, the summer season can also be a favourable time to visit Azerbaijan. This spring and summer season is also a perfect time to revel in picnics, walks, forest trails, horseback riding, and swimming in Azerbaijan.
