Colombia Tourism

Though notoriously infamous for its underworld and drug operations, Colombia is easily one of the most visited tourist destinations of the world. Located in the northwest of South America and bordered by Panama to the northwest, Venezuela and Brazil to the east, and Ecuador and Peru to the south, the country also shares maritime borders with countries like Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Haiti. Colombia was inhabited by a number of Indian tribes before the Spanish colonial times. In 1510, the first ever European settlement on American mainland was founded by the Spaniards. Colombia attained its independence in 1819 after the Venezuelan troops won the battle of Boyacá. The constitution of Colombia was written in 1991, and the nation is governed within the framework of the presidential representative democratic republic.

The predominant religion of Colombia is Roman Catholicism, which makes up as much as 70% of the population. The remainder constitute of other ethnic groups. The official language is Spanish along with a small segment of population speaking English. The country is also home to as many as 68 ethnic languages. The climate in Colombia varies according to the region. Hot summers and mild chilly winters are typical characteristics of the country.
