The history of Cyprus goes back almost 10,000 years to the times of the Neolithic man. It went on to be invaded by the Greek, Persians, Egyptians, and the Romans, becoming a part of the Byzantine Empire. The island was occupied by the British in 1878, who used it as a military base along the route to India, their most vital colony then. Cyprus gained independence from Britain in 1960.
Cyprus is a land full of stark contrasts; a blend of old and new – be it old archaeological attractions, quaint villages and vineyards, venetian houses and museums, or modern hotels, designer shops and extravagant buildings. From snow-covered mountains to the pristine sandy beaches, the diverse landscape amazes you with its variety. The main religion followed in Cyprus is Greek Orthodox, however, the population on the north mostly follow Islam. Almost 80% of the country speaks Greek, while around 11% speak Turkish. The island is blessed with a sub-tropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The Troodos Mountains in central Cyprus experience heavy snowfall.
Cyprus is the birthplace of the Halloumi cheese, which is usually served grilled or fresh, as an appetizer. The country is a paradise for seafood, meat and salad lovers.
