Ecuador Tourism

Ecuador or the Official Republic of Ecuador, is a mixed bag of lush rainforests, botanical parks and world famous beaches thus well sought after by travellers. Located in the north-western peninsula of South America, Ecuador is bordered by Columbia in the North, Peru on the east and south and the Pacific Ocean to its west. Galapagos Islands, and the city of Cuenca are the two extra ordinary gems nestled in the lap of Equidor that are declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites as well.

Varied settlers who sailed on rafts from Central America, Amazon tributaries and descendants from northern South America made to Ecuador before Incas took it over. However, later it fell in the clasps of Spanish empire and remained under colonial rule for 300 years. Ecuador broke free from Spain in the year 1822.

There’s a peaceful co-existence of different sects of people such as Mestizo, Montubio, Amerindian, Afroecuadorian and Whites. However, two of the predominant cultures in Ecuador are Quito and Cañari. The democratic open-mindedness of the country reflects in its cuisine and art. Each civilization has developed its own unique architecture, pottery and craftsmanship. Predominant religions in Ecuador are Islam, Christianity and Baha’i and notable cuisines are Pork, Chicken, Beef and Cuy (guinea pig). Don’t miss out on the dish Arroz con menestra y carne asada (rice with beans and grilled beef) which is hugely popular among the Ecuadorian people.

A few names to remember when planning a tour to Ecuador are; Maquipucuna (Cloud forest Reserve & Rainforest), Montañita (world famous surfing beach), Pululahua (Geobotanical Reserve), Cuyabeno (Wild Life Reserve). The list goes on.
