Estonia Tourism

Officially known as the Republic of Estonia, Estonia is a breath-taking country located in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. Sharing land borders with Latvia on its south and Russia on its east, the country is surrounded by the Gulf of Finland on its north and the Baltic Sea to its west. One of the most scenic countries in Europe, Estonia is a true jewel of the Baltic, dotted with primeval forests, wetlands, picture-postcard cities, gorgeous lakes and rivers, and stunning architecture. The charming city of Tallinn is the capital and largest city of Estonia.

Ancient tribes in Estonia were known to have settled on the shores of the Baltic Sea for thousands of years and remained independent till the 13th century, after which Estonia was conquered and ruled by numerous empires including the Danes, Germans, Swedes and Russians. The Swedes ruled during 16th-17th century, before being acquired by the Russians in 1721. Estonia attained independence in 1918, only to be annexed by USSR in 1940. Estonia finally gained complete independence in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Currently Estonia is a parliamentary republic with a ruling Prime Minister and a President.

It is interesting to note that Estonia is one of the most non-religious countries in the world, with over 75% of the population following no particular religion as such. The remainder are made up of Christians, Muslims, Buddhists and other ethnic minorities. While Estonian is the official language spoken in Estonia, Russian is also spoken as a secondary language by ethnic Estonians between the age group of 40-70 years. English is also widely spoken, especially by the younger generations. Estonia has a temperate climate with warm summers, cold winters, heavy snowfall and rainfall distributed throughout the year.

One of the smallest and the most prettiest of the three Baltic States, Estonia allures tourists with its scenic landscapes, charming fairytale-like villages, the throbbing nightlife and homely cafes, historic churches and the rich cultural diversity.
