Ethiopia Tourism

Situated in Central East Africa and sharing borders with Sudan on the west, Djibouti and Somalia on the east, Kenya on the south and Eritrea on the northeast, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is a beautiful province surrounded by high mountains, the Blue Nile that flows into the northwest and the Lake Tana in the northwest. Ethiopia is the most populated landlocked country in the world and is spread across a vast area of 420,000 square miles. Ethiopia is also the second oldest Christian nation in the world after Armenia.

In a recent excavation, archeologists found the oldest known human ancestors in Ethiopia – Ardipithecus Ramidus Kadabba and Australopithecus Anamensis – both dating back millions of years. Known as Abyssinia in ancient times, Ethiopia’s Solomnic Dynasty claims its descent from King Menelik I. The migration of Asian minorities to Ethiopia began during the prehistoric times. The country later saw the rule of the Roman and Byzantine empires. In 1935, fascist Italy invaded Ethiopia and Eritrea was annexed. In 1941, the British tamed the Italians and Eritrea was annexed back into Ethiopia. The country follows a Federal Parliamentary Republic framework, whereby the Prime Minister is the head of the government.

Majority of Ethiopians are Ethiopian Orthodox, while Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, Islam, Judaism, Animism and Baha’I too are the prominent religions. The official languages of the state are Amharic, Arabic and English, while languages like Somali, Tigrinya Guaragigna are also spoken by the minorities. With its predominantly tropical monsoon climate, Ethiopia has equally moderate summers and winters with average rainfall.

Along with the other African countries like Kenya, South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania, Ethiopia is renowned for preserving its national parks which thrive with endangered wildlife species, and rich flora and fauna. With stunning natural beauty, charming monuments and touristic sites rich in culture and history, Ethiopia is a true treasure land for tourists.
