Guatemala had a flourish of the Mayan civilization before the Spanish arrived. The country did manage to procure independence in 1821, the country became a part of the Federal Republic of Central America. But as the republic floundered, the country plunged to instability. Both dictators and democratic forces wrestled for power here. However, things improved post the six-year civil war that ended in 1966. Since then, Guatemala has seen a surge in economic growth, courtesy a democratic system.   

Spanish has certainly earned its throne as an official language, but there are a score of Mayan languages that are also spoken here, especially in the rural areas. Now to food, chillies and beans are the main ingredients, apart from other traditional items in the Guatemalan cuisine. Over to the religion statistics, Roman Catholics make up more than 55% of the population, about 35% are Protestant, other religions, including the Mayan, complete the chart.

Deserts, valleys, coastal areas, rivers, lowlands, lakes and mountains make up the terrain. A pleasant climate hovers over Guatemala all year, the average temperature hovers around 22 degree Celsius. The main seasons is the very wet rainy season and a dry summer.
