Taxis are easiest and cheapest way to travel around the city. You will also find cheap Istanbul package and holidays that will have taxi transports included as part of it.
Public transportation is good throughout the city. While the network of buses, ferries, catamarans, subways, trains and trams will certainly get you where you are going, you may have to take them all to get there. The trams run from Eminonu all the way to Kabatas (Dolmabahce Palace).
Renting a car on your own could be difficult to drive around because most of the signs are in Turkish language and the traffic conditions are not very good either.
The easiest gateway to Istanbul is Ataturk Airport, located in the European side, where most visitors land. Another option is to land on the Asian side of the city at SabihaGokcen Airport.
The International Istanbul Intercity Bus Terminal at Esenler, connects the city to many other European cities. You can also drive in from other European cities.
The train station in Sirkeci, close to Sultanahmet has good connectivity all across Europe. Asian trains come at Haydarpasa station.
