Situated on the eastern coast of the African continent, Kenya is blessed by nature. In a single country there is the Savanah desert, tropical forests, beaches of the Indian Ocean and the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Unlike other countries, Kenya experiences only two seasons, dry and rainy. Here is a brief look at the best time to visit Kenya.
Best Months to visit Kenya
In January, February & March, the weather is hot & dry and it is considered the best time to visit Kenya. The day temperature is warm while the night and early morning temperatures especially in the forest areas and higher altitude is colder. While one would be comfortable in their tees and trekking shoes in the daytime, it is advisable to carry a warm jacket to face the chilly early morning safaris.
During these dry months, the water holes of most of the National reserves dry out. Thus, most of the wild animals come out of their shelters to quench their thirsts at the only available water resources. This makes it an ideal time to go on safaris to spot maximum animals.
Kenya is blessed with golden sand beaches bordering the Indian Ocean. During this period (Jan – March and later in October) the water is warm and visibility is excellent. There are ample opportunities for tourists to go diving, snorkelling or a go cruising to spot the whale sharks.
The months of June, July, August, September & October are also dry. It is cooler during these months and July - October is when the Great Migration of the wildebeests & zebras takes place from Tanzania to Masai Mara in Kenya.
This is the peak tourist season and the prices of flights, hotels, safaris and other entertainment areas are very high. Availability is also limited, thus, bookings should be made in advance.
Best Months for Great Deals
The rainy season starts gradually in March and hits the peak in April and May. By June, the rains are almost finished but one can expect light showers now and then. During this period of “long rains”, the entire city and country side turns emerald green with flowers and fruits in full bloom. The temperature is hot and humid, which generally cools down with the frequent rainfall.
This is the best time to visit Kenya, especially for people who enjoy relaxing in resorts with less crowd and surrounded by nature at its best. Since the tourists are very few the hotels, flights and beach resorts offer great deals at very low prices. Safaris do take place, but the visibility of wild animals is less, yet the forests are vibrant and colourful.
There’s another bout of rains in Kenya in the months of November and December known as “short rains” as they last for around a month.
The second best month to visit Kenya to grab good deals is September. The weather is dry but hotter. The tourist crowd is very low. This is the ideal time to go on safaris with less crowd and for better visibility of wild life.
