Located in the Phang Nga Province of Thailand, Khao Lak is a series of villages which are now tourist oriented. The name of the place is derived out of Lak Mountain which is one of the main peaks in the hilly region within the Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park. The tiny village of Ban Khao Lak, the original beach, Hat Khao Lak and the bay of Khao Lak (Ao Khao Lak) all lie in the Lam Kaen sub-district of Thai Mueang district. This area is popular for its serene ambience and as a departure point for live-aboard scuba diving trips to the famous exotic Similan islands.
