Laos Tourism

Officially termed as the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Laos is an Asian country landlocked between Vietnam on its east, Cambodia to its south, Thailand to the west and Myanmar and China towards the north. Visitors are drawn to Laos by its laid-back lifestyle and its simple beauty. Especially popular with backpackers, Laos is dotted with extraordinary temples, quaint villages, untouched national parks, lush jungles and plenty of options for accommodation.

The history of Laos can be traced back to the Lao people who migrated from southern China to Laos from the 8th century onwards. During the 14th century, the Lan Xang Kingdom was founded, which ruled Laos till the 18th century, until it split into three separate kingdoms. In 1893, the three kingdoms united to form Laos and became a French protectorate. Laos was granted autonomy by the French in 1949, and became independent in 1953. Currently, Laos is a single-party socialist state with a ruling President and Prime Minister.

Buddhism is the predominant religion in Laos, with almost 67% of the population affiliating with it. The remainder are a mix of Christians and other ethnic minorities. While the official language spoken in the country is Lao, numerous other tribal dialects are also spoken, along with Vietnamese, French and some English. The climate in Laos can be classified into three distinct seasons – extremely hot summers that last from March until May, a rainy seasons that runs between May and October, and a comfortable dry season from November to March with pleasant, mild winters.

The laidback feel of Laos offers tourist a refreshing break from the hustle-bustle of westernized development. Right from the top-notch cuisine and luscious landscapes, to the UNESCO world-heritage-listed city of Luang Prabang studded with quaint monasteries, vibrant markets and breath-taking traditional architecture, the mysterious land of Laos has plenty to offer for a relaxed, offbeat holiday experience.
