Home to one of the oldest civilizations in the world, the Indus Valley Civilization (2500-1700 BC), the beginning of human life in South Asia can be traced back to Pakistan. For the next several centuries that followed, Pakistan was annexed by a series of invaders including the Aryans, Persians, Greeks, Arabs, and Turks. In the 1500s, the territory came under the Moghul Empire, who ruled the Indian subcontinent till mid-18th century, until the British took over. Owing to religious differences, the Indian subcontinent was divided into India and Pakistan, leading to the creation of Pakistan as an independent nation for Muslims in 1947. A new constitution was adopted in 1956, with Pakistan becoming an Islamic republic.

Almost 97% of Pakistan comprises of Muslims, while the remainder are a mix of ethnic minority groups including Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and more.
