A tiny peninsula jutting out into the Persian Gulf from the eastern side of Saudi Arabia, Qatar is a sovereign Arab country located in the Middle East. Situated on the northern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, Qatar shares land borders only with Saudi Arabia, with the rest of the country being surrounded by the Persian Gulf. Traces of human settlement in Qatar can be traced back to almost 7,500 years . Qatar’s history is dotted by invasions from the Arabs, Portuguese, Bahrainis, Ottomans, as well as the British. The country was invaded by Bahrain in 1783 and remained under their influence until 1868. In 1871, the Ottoman Empire took over and ruled Qatar till 1913. Following WWI, in 1916, Qatar became a British Protectorate and remained so till its independence in 1971. Oil was discovered in Qatar during the 1940s, which catapulted it from being one of the poorest countries in the Middle East to the richest country (per capita) in the world today. Qatar is an absolute monarchy and has been ruled by the Al Thani family since the mid-19th century.
Islam is the predominant religion in Qatar, with almost 90% of the population being Sunni Muslims and around 5-15% being Shia Muslims. While Arabic is the official and main language spoken in Qatar, English is also widely spoken. Qatar has an arid, subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild, pleasant winters.
Besides being a shopper’s paradise with its extravagant malls and shopping centres, Qatar also boasts of picturesque beaches, iconic museums, traditional souks, charming sand dunes and spectacular towers and buildings.
