Slovakia Tourism

Slovakia is a beautiful landlocked country in Central Europe which like its several European neighbours, is blessed with immense beauty and charm. Unexplored, pristine, and dotted with fairy tale castles, traditional villages, ancient ruins, wooden churches, mountainous national parks and plenty of hiking trails, one feels that this country has emerged straight out of a fairytale dream.

Slovakia is surrounded by Czech Republic and Austria in the west, Poland in the north, Ukraine in the east and Hungary in the south. This Central European country was earlier a part of the union of Czechoslovakia and surprisingly the two countries amicably separated from the union in a peaceful manner, often known as the Velvet Divorce.

The country's history has linkages to the pre-historic times before it became a part of the Roman Empire. In the 10th century, the region became a part of the kingdom of Hungary till WWI. After the war, Slovakia was merged with other regions to form the state of Czechoslovakia. Slovakia allied with Nazi Germany during WWII. This move resulted in the deportation and cleansing of various ethnic communities including Jews. Post war, Slovakia once again returned to Czechoslovakia and became a member of the Warsaw Pact. Following the collapse of Soviet Union in 1990, Czech Republic and Slovakia ultimately parted ways without a single drop of bloodshed, in 1993.

Today, Slovakia has one of the fastest growth rates in Europe and is part of the European integration. Decades of communist rule had put both Slovakia and Czech Republic out of bounds for travelers but the new found economic prosperity has opened doors for visitors to get lost in this charming and magical land of fairytales and castles. Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia might not be at par with Prague, Vienna or Budapest in terms of tourism, but it sure is growing fast as a backpacker’s destination, following rapid growth in restaurants, hotels and nightlife options. The opportunities are plenty in Slovakia and most of which are unexplored. It is a country where you will be happy to get lost.
