Sweden Tourism

Sweden is a stunning land oozing with contrasts. From diverse landscapes of forests, rolling hills, islands, rocky forests, and sun-kissed beaches to the quaint countryside and thriving urban cities, Sweden has a perfect blend of natural beauty, sophistication, style and simplicity.

The largest of the Nordic countries, Sweden is a country tucked away in Northern Europe, sharing a long border with Norway on its west, and Finland on its northeast. The country has the Baltic Sea bordering it on the east and is connected to Denmark in the south via the Oresund tunnel. Stockholm is the capital and largest city of Sweden.

Sweden is known to have been inhabited by the Germanic tribes since prehistoric times, with the Viking age that lasted from 800 AD to the mid 11th century. The Vikings took Europe by storm, traveling south and east, invading lands. The modern kingdom of Sweden came into existence later, while during the 17th and early 18th centuries, the Swedish empire was known to be one of the greatest powers of Europe. During World Wars I and II, though Sweden remained neutral, it played a humanitarian role. With the end of the Cold War, Sweden joined the European Union. Today, Sweden is a constitutional monarchy with a reigning monarch and a Prime Minister.

Over 85% of Sweden’s population follow the Church of Sweden, while the remainder are a mix of Protestants, Catholics, orthodox Christians and Muslims. Though, the official and main language in Swedish, Sami and other Finnish dialects are spoken by the minorities. The climate in Sweden varies from extremely cold subarctic weather in the north, to temperate climate in the south with cold winters and cool summers.

As compared to its dramatic neighbour Norway, Sweden’s scenery is mellow and gentler, with most of its northern region being heavily forested. With its rolling green fields, picturesque islands, the stunning medieval architectural styles and the sophisticated urban centres, every nook and cranny of Sweden exudes a charm that is hard to find elsewhere.
