Vanuatu Tourism

Located in the South Pacific Ocean, the Republic of Vanuatu is an oceanic island nation. This archipelago of volcanic origin consists of as many as 83 small islands stretching along 1,090 miles east of Northern Australia, over 300 miles northeast of New Caledonia, southeast of Solomon Islands and in the north of New Zealand and the west of Fiji. Rich in natural landscape soaked by the pacific waters, Vanuatu is considered as one of the most beautiful islands in the world.

Vanuatu Islands were inhabited by the Austronesian people who made the islands home almost 4,000 years ago. Several archeological evidences like pottery fragments depicting the cultural and artistic advancements were found, dating back to 1300 to 1100 B.C. Vanuatu was first discovered in 1606 by Pedro Fernandes de Queiros, a Portuguese explorer. In 1774, the Island was named New Hebrides by the famous explorer Captain Cook. After the Anglo-French Condominium in 1906 through America’s arrival during WWII, Vanuatu was declared independent in 1980. The nation has a written constitution and the government is headed by the Prime Minister.

Most of the citizens are Presbyterians (36.7%), while Roman Catholics and Anglicans form almost 15% each of the population. English, French and Creole are the official languages while as many as 100 local languages are spoken by indigenous people. The climate of the Vanuatu is tropical and this results in warm, hot summers. Winters are moderate with cold winds from the southeast, while the monsoons are long with significant rainfall.

The Vanuatu Islands are a treasure land oozing with tourist attractions. The capital city of Port Vila and other surrounding islands like Torba, Sanma, Penama, Malampa, Shefa and Tefea offer a range of tourist activities amid the turquoise waters and tropical islands, Go volcano exploring in Tanna, diving in Santo and land diving in Pentecost.
