Vietnam is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia, and people looking to get a taste of authentic Asian culture, must visit this beautiful country. Located in the South China Sea, Vietnam is famed for its beaches, delicious street food, festivals, culture and of course, its architecture.

The weather in different regions of the country differs from one another, even during the same season, so make sure you plan a trip that takes into account the rainfall pattern and weather changes across the country. The best time to visit Vietnam is said to be around the spring season, during the months of February to April. The autumn season, from September to November, is also a good time to plan a trip to Vietnam.

Summer Season: The summer season in Vietnam lasts from May to August, with the country experiencing different temperatures in different regions. For instance, Hanoi and parts of northern Vietnam witness temperatures around 30°C, whereas Central Vietnam and some southern regions experience temperatures around 40°C. This is also the rainy season for the country, so expect a lot of greenery. However, this is not considered as a good season to visit Vietnam, owing to heavy rainfall in the country.

Tips: It is not advisable to visit the beaches of Vietnam during this time, since the sea might be way too rough to enjoy a swim. June and August are when peak rainfall occurs, making this the worst time to visit Vietnam, since sightseeing trips and day tours are sure to be hindered.

Autumn Season: The autumn season in Vietnam lasts from September to November, with the average temperatures swaying between 20° C to 26° C throughout the country. However, this is the main rainy season for Central Vietnam, so if planning to visit the country in autumn, it is advisable to avoid the central coast.

Tips: If going to the mountainous regions of Vietnam, don’t be fooled by the warm temperatures during the day. The nights can get very cold, so take along heavy woolens. Destinations such as Halong Bay, Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, and Hanoi are good places to visit in autumn, thanks to the pleasant weather. For trekking enthusiasts, it is a good idea to visit Sapa Valley and the mountainous region around it.

Winter Season: The months of December to February bring with them the winter season for Vietnam. It doesn’t get very cold here, but the temperature does reach nearly 20°C in some parts of the country. There is hardly any rain expected here during the winters, so this is actually the best time to visit Vietnam. With the absence of humidity and rains, one can visit most parts of the country easily, except for the colder regions.

Tips: Pack according to the places that you would be visiting. Places such as Sapa experience snow on occasional winters, so make sure to take along heavy woolens. The southern regions experience warmer temperatures, so take along cotton and linen apparels as well.

The winters are also the best time to visit the beaches of Vietnam, be it Con Dao or Phu Quoc, since the humidity is low and the sea is more or less serene. This is, in fact, the best time to enjoy watersports in Vietnam. There are a lot of celebrations held during the winter season, such as Christmas and New Year.

Spring Season: The spring season in Vietnam lasts from February to April, and is one of the best times to visit Vietnam. The temperature during this time remains around 20°C to 30°C across most parts of the country, but in the northern regions the temperature reaches 40°C. Definitely not a good time to plan a trip here, but if you do find yourself here in spring, there is plenty to do and see. The best part is that your day-trips and sightseeing tours won’t be marred by sudden rainfall. Rainfall does occur in the northern regions and the coastal areas, but they are pretty predictable, and you can plan your day around them.

Tips: This is a good time to visit the beach areas, since the clear skies and mild weather ensure great outdoorsy type of days. The northern areas are still pretty cold, so make sure to take along woolens if visiting these parts.
