Things to Do In Zermatt

  • Zermatt is a mountain biker’s paradise and quality bikes can be hired from several shops around the city.
  • Skiing in winter is a must do activity as Zermatt is the starting point for the Patrouille des Glaciers, a ski moutaineering race.
  • Hiking and climbing are a must in summer. The Haute Route is a popular and long trail, which can also be done on skis in winter.
  • Take one of the cable cars to Klein Matterhorn or Gornergrat.
  • Climb Monte Rosa (4634 m), the culminating point of Switzerland. The ascend to the mountain top is physically challenging and requires experience in climbing with crampons, and prior acclimatization to the altitude.
  • Learn the technical know-how of skiing by visiting the European Snowsport Zermatt Ski School.
  • Plan a short excursion by the cog railway, which takes you into the heart of the mountains from Zermatt's town centre to Gornergrat (at 2883 metres). When you arrive, you will (on a clear day) be able to enjoy fantastic views of 29 4,000 metre peaks, including the Matterhorn itself, the Breithorn (4164m), the Monte Rosa (Europe's second-highest peak, at 4633m), and the second longest glacier in the Alps (the Gornergletsher glacier).
  • A visit to the Matterhorn Museum is must for any tourist visiting the Alpine retreat.
  • One can play a game of beach volleyball with the view of the Matterhorn in the background to have a unique experience, and a particular pleasure in the light and dry alpine air.
  • A barbecue experience is a must in any of the idyllic and shady barbecue areas in Zermatt during the hot summer days.
